FreeBMD Part 1 - Births

A ten minute video on how to access and use the Births section of freeBMD which is the free index site for UK Births, marriages and deaths.

The birth index is a useful way of tracking down the GRO index numbers if you want to get a birth certificate. It is also a way to track down what year a person is born if you are struggling to confirm a date, although you do need to be aware that somtimes births are not registered until the following quarter. So for example if your ancestor was born March 30th, they would be registered in the index in the quarter "Apr-Jun". This is particular problem if they are born in Decemver as they might be registered in the "wrong" birth year.
